Ten Leading Causes of Death

Mid-Michigan District 2003

THE 10 DISEASE CATEGORIES SHOWN REPRESENT THE MOST FREQUENT UNDERLYING CAUSES OF DEATH. This information provides a snapshot of the general health status of a community, which aids in the identification of health concerns and the development of intervention programs. This mortality data can also be used to compare the health status of one population to another (i.e., counties) or to evaluate the status of one population over time. The table shown provides a comparison between the three counties of the Mid-Michigan District Health Department, Michigan and the United States. Approximately 60% of all deaths occur in persons age 75 and older; this fact is reflected in the correlation that exists between "total" death rates for each geographic region and the percentage of residents age 65 and older. The graphs represent the proportion of all deaths that each underlying cause is responsible for. Of particular interest is the relative difference in the proportion of deaths caused by heart disease and cancer in each county.
