Risk Communication Plan

The Mid-Michigan District Health Department’s goal in any crisis is to be first, be right, and be credible. In a crisis, good communication saves lives. The MMDHD Crisis and Risk Communication Plan will describe the roles, the lines of responsibilities, and needed resources to effectively communicate with the public, the media, and local response partners during a public health emergency. This plan is an annex of the Mid-Michigan District Health Department Emergency Response Plan and is integrated into the overall health department emergency response procedures. This plan will also be integrated into the Public Health Services Annex of the Clinton, Gratiot and Montcalm counties’ Hazard Mitigation Response Plans.

The health department’s Public Information Officer (PIO) will work with the Public Information Team to develop and disseminate accurate information to the media and the public. The team will be augmented by other agency personnel based on the public health emergency. The team will be responsible for assuring that the public receives accurate and timely emergency information. The PIO is responsible for collecting information related to public health from all federal, state, and local sources, and verifying its authenticity before release to the news media. All information will be reviewed and approved by the Health Officer before release to ensure accuracy.
