Children's Fluoride Varnish Program

MMDHD Kids Oral Health

Tooth decay in children is a widespread preventable disease. Children as young as 12 to 18 months can get cavities. Cavities in baby teeth can cause pain and even prevent children from being able to eat, speak, sleep and learn properly. Implementing proven strategies, such as fluoride varnish, has potential to prevent a significant burden of disease. Mid-Michigan District Health Department's Fluoride Varnish Program targets children age 0 to 5 during their Women, Infants and Children (WIC) appointments. During these appointments, children may receive a dental screening and/or fluoride varnish treatment, oral health tools and education.

Kindergarten Oral Health Requirement

Children's Program

Michigan passed a law to ensure kids enrolling into their first year of school have an oral health assessment prior to starting school. Michigan’s new Kindergarten Oral Health Assessment (KOHA) is important since poor oral health can affect a child’s attendance, grades, and overall performance in school. MI KOHA helps ensure each student is healthy and ready for a successful school year!

Visit the MDHHS KOHA Website to learn more!

**Michigan's new kindergarten dental checkup requirement helps schools identify children suffering from untreated dental disease and helps parents establish a dental home for their children.
